PARC Implements Wastewater Network Rehabilitation Works in Khan Younis to Reduce Sewage Overflow Risks and Improve Sanitation Conditions

Khan Younis, Gaza Strip: The Palestinian Agricultural Development Association (PARC), in partnership with Christian Aid – DEC, implemented maintenance, rehabilitation, and improvement works for the wastewater network in several residential areas, neighborhoods, and displacement camps in Khan Younis, as part of the project:

“Integrated Humanitarian Support and Early Recovery for Palestine: Pathways to Safety, Recovery, and Resilience – Phase II.”

The intervention was implemented in response to repeated appeals and complaints from residents regarding malfunctions and blockages affecting the wastewater network in several areas, particularly around the Agency Industry Building and Taiba Towers, as well as surrounding residential neighborhoods and displacement camps. These issues have resulted in recurring sewage overflows and the accumulation of wastewater in streets and surrounding areas. The intervention was carried out in coordination with the Khan Younis Municipality.

The works included the maintenance and rehabilitation of existing wastewater manholes and pipelines, as well as the cleaning and unclogging of six manholes to remove accumulated sediment and blockages and improve wastewater flow. The intervention also included the supply and installation of approximately 30 meters of 6-inch-diameter wastewater pipelines.

The works further included the installation of new inspection manholes with different diameters and depths, according to site conditions and network requirements, including manholes with diameters of up to one meter and others measuring up to 60 cm. Existing manholes were also rehabilitated through the installation of new covers and slabs with diameters of 80 cm, 60 cm, and 40 cm, together with the necessary installation works and accessories to ensure the safety and continued functionality of the network.

These interventions come amid extensive damage to infrastructure and essential service networks across the Gaza Strip, which has placed additional pressure on wastewater systems, particularly in areas hosting large numbers of displaced people and returning families.

The intervention is particularly important ahead of the winter season, as rainfall and water accumulation may place additional pressure on damaged wastewater networks, potentially worsening blockages, sewage overflows, and the accumulation of contaminated water, with associated health and environmental risks for affected communities.

The rehabilitation and maintenance works aim to improve the efficiency of the wastewater network, reduce blockages and sewage overflows, and mitigate the risks associated with wastewater accumulation, unpleasant odors, and the spread of insects, thereby contributing to improved sanitation, environmental, and living conditions for residents, displaced people, returning families, and surrounding communities.

Through these interventions, PARC, in partnership with supporting organizations and local authorities, continues to provide essential services that respond to urgent humanitarian needs, support early recovery and the rehabilitation of critical infrastructure, and strengthen affected communities’ access to a safer and healthier environment.
