Job Title: Hygiene Promoter and trainer 

Location: Gaza Strip
Reports to: Project Coordinator
Contract Type: Full-time – Project-based
Duty Station: Gaza Field Office
Duration: Based on project timeframe, with potential for extension (based on performance and funding availability)

1.      Job Purpose Summary and Objectives

A Hygiene Promoter is responsible for improving public health by educating and mobilizing communities to adopt better hygiene practices, in addition to conducting interactive hygiene awareness sessions, workshops, and campaigns on critical topics. Also, She/He is responsible for the direct implementation, supervision, and quality assurance of hygiene promotion activities within the program. The role ensures the planning, coordination, and monitoring of hygiene awareness sessions and the distribution of hygiene-related materials, in close collaboration with field facilitators, local stakeholders, and affected communities.

This position aims to contribute to disease prevention and improved hygiene behavior change among affected populations, particularly in vulnerable communities impacted by the ongoing emergency.

 

2. Roles and Responsibilities

  • Supervise and guide Hygiene promotion activities in the planning and execution of hygiene promotion activities.
  • Monitor the quality and relevance of hygiene messages and activities to ensure they are culturally appropriate and based on community needs.
  • Coordinate field-level logistics related to hygiene kits distribution, community meetings, and monitoring visits.
  • Support needs assessments, baseline and endline surveys, and other data collection processes.
  • Ensure the application of gender-sensitive, inclusive, and participatory approaches in all hygiene promotion activities.
  • Collaborate with local authorities, community leaders, and other humanitarian actors to align interventions and avoid duplication.
  • Compile and submit weekly and monthly field reports with activity data, challenges, and recommendations.
  • Report protection-related concerns or feedback raised by beneficiaries through established accountability mechanisms.
  • Ensure the safety and dignity of both the team and beneficiaries in all operations.

 

3. Main Tasks and Duties

  • Develop weekly fieldwork plans for hygiene promoters under guidance from the WASH Project Coordinator.
  • Conduct interactive hygiene awareness sessions.
  • Supervise the implementation of hygiene awareness sessions in schools, shelters, households, and public gatherings.
  • Conduct spot-checks and quality control visits to verify the accuracy and effectiveness of hygiene promotion messages.
  • Ensure timely and equitable distribution of hygiene kits and other related NFIs to targeted households.
  • Facilitate training sessions for hygiene promoters on behavior change communication, CHS, and safer programming.
  • Collect feedback from beneficiaries and ensure referral to the appropriate focal points.
  • Coordinate with MEAL teams to support data verification, satisfaction surveys, and monitoring of outcomes.
  • Maintain detailed records and documentation of activities and share with the reporting officer.
  • Support emergency responses (e.g., cholera outbreaks, displacement) with immediate hygiene interventions.
Job Requirements:

4. Required Academic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, related medical degree, Social Sciences, Community Development, or a related field.
  • Additional training in WASH, Health Promotion, or Humanitarian Principles is an asset.

5. Required Experience

  • +2 years of relevant experience in hygiene promotion, community mobilization, or Medical/health-related, preferably in an emergency or humanitarian context.
  • Previous experience working with NGOs or UN agencies in Gaza is desirable.
  • Familiarity with donor requirements and humanitarian standards (e.g., Sphere, CHS, Do No Harm).

 

6. Skills Required for the Job

Technical Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of hygiene promotion strategies and behavior change communication.
  • Capacity to conduct community-based activities and participatory methods.
  • Familiarity with data collection tools (e.g., Kobo Toolbox, ODK).
  • Understanding of protection, gender, and inclusion principles.


Behavioral Skills:

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and work under pressure.
  • Flexibility and problem-solving mindset in dynamic environments.
  • High ethical standards and commitment to humanitarian values.

Computer Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to draft reports and field documentation in Arabic and English.
  • Basic use of mobile data collection and messaging tools (e.g., WhatsApp, SMS).

7. Other Requirements and Recommendations

Languages Required:

  • Fluent in Arabic (spoken and written).
  • Proficient in English (written and spoken) for reporting and coordination purposes.

Gender Aspects

  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to child safeguarding and protection from sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA).
  • Good knowledge of gender and inclusion principles.

Work Environment:

  • Field-based with frequent travel to project sites in Gaza, including high-risk and hard-to-reach areas.
  • Office-based work at PARC Gaza office as required.
